What we do

Food Safety has represented a “horizontal priority in Europe” and ELIKA has been structured in line with the aforementioned guidelines, laying emphasis on the development of prevention strategies, on a promotion of safety throughout the food chain and participation in European forums to share synergies and carry out research.

Food Safety has become a "priority throughout Europe" and in 2000, the “food safety white book” was published. This established guidelines for all Member States, and emphasised “a more preventive policy towards potential food risks, improving their rapid response capability should the existence of any kind of risk be demonstrated”. Likewise, the white book pointed to the need for a comprehensive approach, from the very beginning of the food chain.

Elika has been organised in accordance with the aforementioned European guidelines and has adopted its areas and functions in order to apply the current food safety policy by developing its Risk Assessment area and by promoting safety throughout the food chain. Elika provides the government and sector with information in order to help them adapt to the constant developments in legislation and through information and training activities on the subject of food safety.

In a food alert situation, we coordinate information and provide the authorities responsible for Animal Feed and safety and agrofoods products with the appropriate technical support.

Likewise, we consider that the Technology Surveillance area is of especial relevance as it allows us to keep up-to-date and disseminate the information generated in our work areas. We also take part in European networks or platforms in order to share experiences, set up collaborations and participate in the forums in which this information is generated.
